Kin Canada Bursaries

Kin Canada Bursaries is a program of the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund (HREF) that is open to students who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents. Students do not need to be a member of Kin Canada to be eligible for the award.

Because Kin Canada Bursaries is a public program, please see HREF and Bursaries on the public site for more information.

About HREF

Kin Canada Bursaries is a program of the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund (HREF).

HREF Kin Canada established the HREF in memory of Hal Rogers, Kin Canada's founder who passed away in 1994.
Background Throughout his life, Hal Rogers believed in the value of education. In his own words, "providing and promoting the finest and most effective education possible for our young people" was a noble endeavor.

Hal’s commitment and devotion to education is evidenced in his many years as a trustee on the Forest Hill Board of Education. In addition, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation named Founder Hal the first recipient of the coveted Lamp of Learning Award (pictured right) in 1950. The Lamp is awarded annually to a non-teacher who has made an “outstanding contribution to public secondary education in the Province.”
The HREF is supported by Kinsmen, Kinette and Kin clubs, and public donations.

From the fund, $1,000 bursaries are awarded to successful Canadian applicants who are pursuing post-secondary education at a recognized university, community college, technical institute and other schools for advanced education.

Board of Trustees

The HREF Board of Trustees carry out the Fund's purpose to promote, encourage and sponsor educational programs and activities.

The HREF Board of Trustees are tasked with scoring the endorsed applications sent to them by the clubs. Strict scoring guidelines are used to evaluate the submissions in order to determine the successful bursary recipients.

"Receiving this award motivated me to maintain high marks and excel in the aviation program at Mount Royal University. I needed warm boots with a good grip, a sleeping bag and survival gear for cross country flights.  I also needed a good quality headset for flying. The bursary also assisted in paying for my books and maps. It has helped my aviation career take flight."
